Man Verses Food

Find out who will be crowned this year's "Caribbean eating king or queen" on July 12 at Lake Quassy (2132 Middlebury Road, Middlebury; 203-758-2913, quassy.com), when the annual Merritone Family Fun Day and Outdoor Picnic hosts two national competitive eating contests, in both the "beef patty" and the "bun and cheese" eating categories (with supplies from Caribbean Food Delights and The Royal Caribbean Bakery). Top, so-called "food warriors" from the East coast will go bite for bite to win $1,400 in prize money and the prestigious titles of "Patty Python" and "Bun and Cheese Baron" — including local favorite Jon "The Pride of Connecticut" Taylor, who took third place at last year's event. The contest is part of the Caribbean Heritage Festival and Family Fun Day at Lake Quassy; tickets ($40) also include rides, karaoke, a kids' dance contest, a tri-state domino competition and music from Merritone Disco and Road International. If you want to stuff your face with the best of 'em, show up by noon to register in person, or pre-register online at competitiveeaters.com. For more info call (917) 202-2435.

Cool Eats

The re-opening of the Winter entrance to Mohegan Sun's Casino of the Earth (1 Mohegan Sun Blvd., Uncasville; 888-226-7711, mohegansun.com) comes with some cool new dining options. Just opened is Bobby's Burger Palace (BBP) by celebrity chef Bobby Flay, with regional flare: For example, the Napa Valley burger ($7.50) comes with fresh goat cheese, watercress and Meyer lemon honey mustard; the spice-crusted Dallas burger comes with coleslaw, Monterey Jack, BBQ sauce and pickles; and the trademarked Crunchburger ($7.50) is loaded with double American cheese and potato chips. Open inside of Fidelia's Market is a new branch of Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana, bringing New Haven's famous thin crust, coal-fired brick oven pizza to the lucky casino crowd, and Jasper White's Summer Shack Express (with quick-style service, offering New England faves such as chowder, lobster rolls, fried oysters, clam cakes and freshly-shucked oysters, plus live lobsters packed for take-out), as well as the return of Woodland Wok serving Asian-inspired stir-fries and noodle bowls, and the relocated Chief's Bagels, with sandwiches, chocolate-dipped Oreos, caramel-dipped apples, giant cookies and more. Next month, watch for the addition of The Original SoupMan (of Seinfeld fame), serving 50 varieties of Al Yeganeh's Zagat-rated soups, plus salads, hot New York deli sandwiches, panini and smoothies.

Also, through Sept. 7, deal-seekers can take advantage of Mohegan Sun's many "Sizzling Summer" specials, including two-for-one entrée deals on Tuesdays at Big Bubba's BBQ, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, The Dubliner, Geno's Fast Break, Jasper White's Summer Shack and Lucky Lounge. At the same eateries (except for Big Bubba's BBQ), fun specialty drinks can be found on "Thrills and Chills Thursdays," with weekly drawings for cars and cash.
