How much art can you possibly fit into one city? Apparently, a lot. A lot of art. This year, City-Wide Open Studios will tack another bushel of artists onto its growing list of 2,000 alumni. Which means three weeks of a lot to see. And hear. And etc. A 24-page directory of Open Studio artists and events was printed in the Oct. 4 Advocate, and is available now at Artspace (50 Orange St., New Haven). An online guide, including samples of artists' work, is at artspacenh.org/cwos/2007/.
Weekend 1: Oct. 13-14
Erector Square (315 Peck St., New Haven) hosts nearly 90 artists, from Atlas to Zervas, Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Or just come to see an abandoned toy factory.
Weekend 2: Oct. 20-21
Local studio artists open their doors for viewing. Catch a bike tour from Artspace at noon, rain or shine. Or for a $5 donation, make it a bus tour (make a reservation: 203-772-2709). Or start your own odyssey. Just try not to get lost.
Weekend 3: Oct. 27-28
Visit the alternative space when the former Hamden Middle School (550 Newhall St., Hamden) opens its doors to 250 artists from noon to 5 p.m. Yes, 250 artists. Or just come to see an abandoned middle school. Not quite as cool as the toy factory, but you get the idea.
Lasso Project: Oct. 12 to Dec. 14
See what alumni of Open Studios have to offer. Several formerly vacant sites in Ninth Square, all near Artspace, feature works by Siebren Versteeg (veteran of Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago), Baptiste Ibar (whose work was featured in the movie The Science of Sleep), local art kingpin Johanna Bresnick and six other successful homegrown talents. There's even an audio tour you can access via your cellphone, at (571) 730-5432.
