Election 2008: Did Ron Paul Break Fox News?

Indeed he may have--if the South Carolina GOP debate was any indication.

Thursday, January 17, 2008

Two days before the New Hampshire primary, Fox News staged a forum for the Republican presidential candidates and invited everyone who was at the ABC debate the day before, except for Ron Paul. They introduced the forum by saying that the GOP nominee would be one of the five candidates who were there, a statement clearly meant to suggest that Ron Paul doesn't have a chance to win.

That may have been the straw that broke the camel's back, if the camel was an American populace growing increasingly impatient and frustrated with Faux News propaganda.

Fox News wanted to have a forum where it talked with the five GOP candidates who basically agree with their way of thinking: who like the war in Iraq, who like the surge, who want to increase troops in the region, and who have no problem with an eventual war against Iran. What they didn't count on was the depth of support for Ron Paul.

It is hard to measure Paul's support. He is the most-searched-for candidate on the internet, by far, outpacing every Democrat and Republican. He probably raised the most money last quarter (probably, because he reports his donations live while others wait for the FEC deadline at the end of the month). In a graphic map of Meetup groups, other candidates have patches of red dots, while Paul's map is a solid red across the entire country. He has won almost every post-debate poll. Independent Paul supporters have helped him raise $10 million over two days, setting and breaking his own record. There is a blimp flying around the country that asks Who is Ron Paul? on one side and suggests you Google Ron Paul on the other.

Yet Paul came in fifth in both Iowa and New Hampshire. True, he beat Rudy Giuliani in the first, and nearly tied him in the second, despite the fact that Giuliani apparently spent more time campaigning in both states. But still, the other measures of Paul's support would suggest he should be winning these primaries, possibly by a landslide.

So is the mystery, why does Paul not do better in primaries? Or is the mystery, why does his support seem larger than it is?

It's almost an impossible question to answer. Almost because we now have, thanks to Fox News, proof in the stock market that the support is genuine, and the primary results so far are the aberrations.

The news that Fox News would be excluding Ron Paul from its N.H. debate came on Dec. 27. From that day on, the stock price of News Corp., its parent company, fell every day, losing a cumulative 10 percent, or about $6 billion, over the next seven days.

To be sure, other media companies fell as well. Time Warner and Viacom each fell about 6 percent over that period. The Paul supporters who spread the message of selling News Corp. stock, boycotting Fox News advertisers, and otherwise imposing their economic will cost the media giant billions.

The bleeding stopped Jan. 8, when Fox News relented to the economic pressure and invited Paul to the South Carolina debates. The stock price gained nearly 4 percent in just two days, right back in line with the other media companies.

Those debates were held last week. They were very similar to all the earlier debates, to which Paul had been invited. Other candidates get asked about policy issues while Paul gets asked about his electability. Other candidates snipe at each other and in particular Paul, while Paul ignores them and talks solely about the issues, the only candidate to answer every question that is asked.

But there was one major difference: Whereas in past debates, Paul received a vanishingly small portion of air time, in this one he received approximately equal time. I counted the number of words each candidate uttered. Paul surpassed the word output of John McCain, Mitt Romney, Fred Thompson, and Rudy Giuliani. Only Mike Huckabee said more words.

Maybe it's because Paul talks faster than the others, or because he needed to respond to accusations against him by the other candidates. Or maybe Fox News has realized that the people buttering its proverbial bread are conservatives like Paul and they are trying to recapture that key demographic.

That was, in essence, the only difference in this debate. Everyone else still wants to keep our troops overseas. Everyone else is itching to go to war in Iran at the slightest provocation. Everyone else thinks it is up to the government and the Federal Reserve to stimulate the economy. Only Paul wants to bring our troops home, abolish the IRS, abolish the Federal Reserve, and slash our debt, spending and warring.

On the poll run by Fox News, where viewers can only vote once per cell phone number, the winner of the debate was, as always, Ron Paul.

FANTASTIC ARTICLE!

Mr. Maymin, I don't know if you wrote this article because you hate Fox or support Dr. Paul. Either way, it's a great article and I appreciate you writing/posting it.

Thanks for your article. It made me smile. I did a story on the nose dive of the NWS stock. It went viral and received over 30K hits on nolanchart and who knows on all the sites it was mirrored on. Then I saw that the horde of RP supporters posted on every financial message board on the web to sell NWS and to short it hard. Talk of the boycott was everywhere as well.

Great article, full of truth :) Hard to find the trust these days. Some newspapers are using racial letters as their popularity :), cheap ass. They should also thank to Ron Paul that their crapy news sites also have a couple of hits because of Dr. Ron Paul.
Thanks again for the nice article.

If you look at the demographic that votes for Ron Paul, it's the people under 30. These are the people (like me) who know and use the internet the most. The campaign needs to get it's message out to the older population, and then more votes will come in.

Thank you for an enlightening article. Now that raises the question that if Ron Paul can raise so much, has supporters all over the place, and consistently win the debates, why isn't he getting the votes? It's quite obvious that he is well liked, but are we to believe that his supporters, who are so enthusiastic, simply just do not vote? I think there's something up...all the evidence certainly points to that conclusion.

An interesting article on the true support out there.

If you think you are alone in supporting Ron Paul donate $10.00 on January 21st and be counted with the rest of America that says enough is enough. Change our foreign policy, stabilize our failing economy and dollar, plus bring our troops home from Iraq and support the capture of Osama bin Laden.

Actually, Fox already said they were going to include Paul in SC before the NH Forum, they just wanted to screw up his chances in NH where he was more popular.

Here, here! Excellent article, and a good insight on the blind ignorance the other candidates displayed during that debate. Dr. Paul was the only one with factual information to back up his proposals, and the only one to take a real stand.

I truly hope Ron Paul shows these fat cats what a real President can be like.

Let's help him continue the fight on 1/21:

Mr. Maymin,

Thank you so much. This article is the best , and most precise article ever written regarding Ron Paul and the Republican thugs he is running against. I am glad to see that there are some media outlets that are actually telling it like it is, and no sugar coating. I like it because Ron Paul doesn't sugar coat anything either, and he also tells it like it is, whether it is good or bad. Ron Paul has integrity, and principles & simply put the others do not and will never be like Ron Paul. Once again, thank you, and God Bless.

Ron Paul has my vote and support here in California.

It's interesting to see these coordinated media attacks against Dr. Paul. They seem to come in waves. Check out the NY times article:

http://politics.nytimes.com/election-guide/2008/results/votes/index.html#1

Where is Dr. Paul among the candidates? The strategy of these guys appears to be to smear Dr. Paul with accusations of racism, exclude him from media coverage, call his views "fringe" and call his supporters "crazy."

It seems that many in the media have a real fight to pick with Dr. Paul. Are they scared that their vested interests may be in danger by his rising popularity?

Bravo! A most excellent article indeed. My interest in Ron Paul was initially sparked when I observed the Folks at Fox mocking and demeaning his character. After investigating Dr. Paul' profile and political history I was most disturbed by the meaning of this. It is clear to me that the biggest story of this election is the censorship and subversion of our political process by the mainstream media. I may not support all of Ron Paul's polical views but I do know that out of every other Candidate, in both parties, he is the only one telling the truth.
Hopefully dedicated Journalists will make every effort to inform the public of Fox's information blackout and the hijacking of our constitutional right to free elections. I suspect that this is just the tip of the iceberg.
Thanks again.

I believe that Ron Paul is the only Republican who can beat Hillary and/or Obama in the general election, because Dr. Paul will attract many Independents and Democrats. I know, because I have always considered myself a "liberal" Democrat, and I will be voting for Dr. Paul, even if I have to write him in. The reason he will attract Independents and Democrats is his platform of peace, prosperity and individual liberty. He will end the wars, bring the troops home, restore the Constitution and civil liberties, and salvage our failing economy. Ron Paul is not doing this for himself, he is doing it for us. Ron Paul is the real deal!

Sir, you asked: "So is the mystery, why does Paul not do better in primaries? Or is the mystery, why does his support seem larger than it is?"

Mr. Maymin, your question is valid and Rojer (above) is correct! Ron Paul's "fair & balanced" media coverage has been tremendously small or completely non-existent.

Besides the NY Times, it's also MSNBC omitting Dr. Paul after New Hampshire, like here:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=vHuDAqkfJoo

There are so many more in the Mainstream Media (MSM) who are complict in this way.... and I'm sure we could compile a laundry list of the guilty. So, with "reporting" as bad as this, my question to you is: How would the masses even know about Ron Paul?

Posted by Tom on 1.16.08 at 13.45
I'd be the first one to support ending this tyrannical looting of the US treasury at the expense of innocent human lives. Ron Paul does seem to have more people skills than other past candidates. All I can say is be cautious. Don't forget that the purpose of a right wing government who believes in smaller government is to allow the marketplace to create and enforce it's own regulations. In plain English that means big multinational corporations should be subject to less taxes, and accountability. I have to admit, I don't have the best impression of U.S. politics, so this may be coming from a pessimistic place, but consider the fact that any politician out there can research and present a platform that appeals to the majority as long as they have enough funding.
Posted by Bill Williams on 1.16.08 at 13.47
Great article, thank you.

If Ron Paul broke Fox News, they had it coming. The media bias is so blatant it's amazing. Time Magazine had an article on the 'candidates' a few weeks ago, and guess who they left out? That's right, Ron Paul.

The fact that most of the media outlets are owned by a handful of mega-corporations that make millions off the war cannot be stressed enough. Most of the so-called 'news' outlets have conflicts of interest.

Let's win this one, people.

I'll be voting for Paul in the Missouri primaries, but I do have a little qualm with your piece. The idea that Fox's stock went down because they didn't include Dr. Paul in the debate is pretty silly. Fox's stock went down because the rest of the market is tanking because of the looming recession (which I think Dr. Paul's economic policies will fix). Great story otherwise and thank you for your coverage!

You are so right Phil. Thank you for the fresh air of truth.

Since I am boycotting Fox I don know this firsthand, but I have heard others say Fox has been declaring Fred 4th place today.
Even though Paul was 4th place in Michigan Primary.
Some even said they watched Russia's news today because they were the only ones reported the truth.

So the lies and propaganda continue.

It occurs to me that Paul's support may be coming from places beyond our borders. It is the world wide web after all. Regardless, he has the best solutions to what is ailing our country. Even though the "accepted" media outlets are obviously leaving "him" out of the picture his ideas are reaching critical mass because I hear them parroting his concerns more often now. They just need to be able to claim credit for them. Same thing happened with Perot. I voted for him also. It's not about the candidate for me. It's about the ideas. I'm ready to bring our troops home from "every" foreign station. That is an idea whose time has come.

The Thomas Paine, Common Sense 1776 is the Internet today and all that it is exposing that has been nothing but deception, distraction and noise from the media and those personalities that promote themselves as fair or balanced or even conservatives or leaders or patriots.

And those people will not and never will see what is coming because this is not all about Ron Paul. It is a bottom up campaign from people that care about themselves and know they can no longer put up, live or even exist with something that is promoted by the status quo, all the other candidates that will not work and is destroying the future for all of us.

There's a very good reason why most people don't support Dr. Paul - they haven't been told to. Most people are followers, following what the television tells them to. One of our government's greatest crimes is controlling the mass media system and thus the minds of much of America. There are satellites beaming thought control rays, but you don't need a tin foil hat to be safe. Turn off the TV and think!

Nice to hear some figures on how we affected Fox and others bottom line. I feel we have to continue and put pressure on them and just sell, sell, sell !! their stock and not watch their program. As for their sponsors, we have to protest them as well until they do the right thing throughout the election process. We know they won't give Paul any respect. I refuse to give them any until they publicly apologize for their behavior. They know they'll get their money back once this is all over. I however won't be doing business with FOX or any major network or their affiliates from now on. That's what I can do as a citizen of the United States. We can NOT wait to fix this election FRAUD, til the General election BECAUSE by then, the treasonous CFR will have stolen the primaries and had TWO CFR members from opposite parties win, SO IN GENERAL ELECTION, NO MATTER WHO WE VOTE FOR, TREASONOUS CFR MEMBER STILL WINS! This is how it was last two elections and probably IF truth be told before that! WE must have fair elections OR our democracy is DONE! And we also MUST drive out of office ALL these TRAITOR'S FROM EITHER PARTY AND NOW OR OUR NATION IS DONE AND SO ISN'T OUR FREEDOM'S TOO! Wake up! Our nation is being destroyed from within by NOT the BOGUS "boogeymen" "Al-CIA-DA" but TRAITOR'S IN OUR OWN GOV'T! FACT! From BOTH parties! Who was it that said if our nation is ever destroyed it will be by traitors from within and not the so called "enemy without"!? BIAS IN THE MEDIA: ROCKEFELLER SAID IT
The following 1991 David Rockefeller quote to the Trilateral Commission illustrates further the bias in the media:
?We are grateful to The Washington Post, The New York Times, Time Magazine and other great publications whose directors have attended our meetings and respected their promises of discretion for almost forty years. It would have been impossible for us to develop our plan for the world if we had been subject to the bright lights of publicity during those years.
?But, the work is now much more sophisticated and prepared to march towards a world government. The supranational sovereignty of an intellectual elite and world bankers is surely preferable to the national auto-determination practiced in past centuries.?
Why isn?t this attitude and goal screaming at you from our ?independent? press? Because it?s not ?independent?, of course.
The No.1 enemy right NOW is first the treasonous politician's we have running America and our freedoms into the ground and destroying BOTH but no.2 enemy of our nation and freedoms is the Main Stream Media and even what they call so called "left gate keeper's" too! Great article. Thanks. The British under-estimated the Revolution as well. As the economy falls and the financial experts weigh in, only one candidate is mentioned as having the solution - Dr. RON PAUL

In all likelihood, the decent of News Corps stock price was overall market related, not due to anything related to Dr. Paul's exclusion from the NH debates or our opposition to Fox News. (If News Corps stock was the only one to decrease in the industry, that's one thing. But that's not what happened.) The focus should instead be placed on the state of the overall market and the fact that Dr. Paul is the only candidate addressing the issue with cold, hard facts. We as a nation have a flawed monetary system. We're not taught the concept of "supply and demand" in school for the absolute excitement of the subject matter. The concept exists because it's real and is having a huge effect on the US dollar. As far as I can see, Dr. Paul is the only candidate WILLING to make this a focus of their campaign.
Posted by Kelly on 1.17.08 at 7.53
The entire stock market is down approximately 10% or even more over the same time period. Unless Fox stock dropped much more than others, it makes no sense that it had much to do with any Ron Paul supporters selling it. If the stock is fairly valued, a few people selling it for political reasons will just set up profits for others willing to buy it at a discount. It only works if the boycot of viewing the station and its sponsors actually destroys part of its value.

Congrats to those who tamed the giant! I recommend all go to www.blackboxvoting.org and read BLACK BOX VOTING BOOK , A CHILLING EYE OPENER on who's got control of our votes. Also there, CBS Report: 2000 Pres. Election mis-called due to voting machine, etc. Along with the HBO film HACKING DEMOCRACY, we need to make sure our votes for Paul ever get counted!!

This is an excellent article and thank you for writing it. It shows that what the media SAYS the public is thinking, is not really how the public is thinking or, more importantly, how they are planning to vote.

And it's not even about Ron Paul as much as it is about the issues for which Ron Paul stands--issues on the minds and hearts of most Americans: bringing home our boys, stopping this empire building (warring) and getting the monkeys off the backs of the working people of our country.

I agree with a well written article and lots of the super comments that have been posted. And yes, the majority of following is the younger crowd. I am 56 years old and have been trying to get my generation to at least pay attention to the debates. I believe Dr. Paul needs to use powerful TV ads asking the question why are the candidates and the mainstream media so scared of him? It's his message and these can be shown and explained using debate video He has got to hit the audience where it gets their attention and then people of all ages will start finding their own answers instead of the media spin. Getting mad or angry is not the answer but TV ads will at least be played in a fair playing field. Ron, keep it up... Your message has caused me to rethink my beliefs. Thanks

Excellent article; had I owned any Newscorp, I would have sold it for good; no longer watch any Fox News; what I do not understand is how any patriotic American could possibly be against Ron Paul. His platform is the US Constitution. If you are against that, then you should probably consider moving to another country. I too also believe that the only candidate who has any real chance of beating Hillary and/or Obahma is Ron Paul. To the writer concerned about not getting the message out to the over 30 set, I would just say that I am 55 and support Ron Paul 100%; if he is not on the ticket, I will write him in. There is no other candidate like him and hasn't been in my lifetime.

well, after more hours of research, perhaps the message really falls on us that have actually received it and its now our responsibility to spread the message (at least get people interested enough to research the facts). There are some really great videos (you tube for example) that could become great commericals. Lot of talented people on board. I am doing my best to open the eyes of people I know. thanks again.

I too will be voting for the only person capable of fixing a broken
America, Ron Paul. The sad part is the American Primaries and
General election is a fraud. The machines and the system are
rigged to produce a President that our current administration,
government and big business has already decided on.

Don't you think it's strange that when Ron Paul does get a chance to speak on national TV, be it debates, Leno, Letterman or anyplace else the applause is extremely loud. The majority of the internet polls show Ron Paul always winning. People are reporting and showing pictures of whole
towns and neighborhoods covered with Ron Paul signs.

It has the appearance that most/majority of Americans want
Ron Paul as President but he always finishes 3rd or less in
TV/newspaper polls and all the completed primaries. I find
that very strange. Maybe we have criminal acts in national
media and national voting primaries happening right before
our eyes. Now I'm wondering who will OR can stop these
things from continuing. What ever person or group that does
try to stop it from happening will find themselves in prison
or dead. I never thought I would feel this way much less put it in writing but right now I actually am fearful of posting this but did it anyway ....... America the land of the free.

Thank you for your insightful article about Ron Paul. His supporters are so grateful when a journalist gives him fair treatment in the press.

As for the other media, if they were to give him just half as much coverage as they give the other candidates, Ron Paul would be winning hands down, #1 all the way to the White House.

Bill Moyers at PBS did the most respectful, indepth interview of Ron Paul back in October. If this had been aired on "regular" television, Ron Paul would be the most beloved and respected man in the country. As it is now, we just have to work that much harder campaigning for him to make up for the shuns and negative coverage.

So again, really grateful for your article and I hope more reporters with integrity follow your example.

Ron Paul is the only President I want for 2008

The whole time I read this I was waiting for the cheap shot, but it never came. Not only did you not put him down, you didn't even call his supporters gun-toting, racist, internet geeks who believe only in conspiracies, have no comprehension of how America REALLY works and is likely to be a danger to society "when Paul loses." I don't even know how to feel about this.
Thank you.

Thank you for writing this article, and raising IMPORTANT QUESTIONS.Why are the major news networks failing to mention Ron Paul, when the online polls clearly show Ron Paul is more popular than the others. How can he raise so much money, without this same support. Why is he asked questions about his electability, and not about the real questions about his souloutions to the problems America is facing today? You sir,are an american patriot, thank you.

Hi Phil,

I listened to your radio interview, good job. I did a radio interview myself back in October out here in California to try to raise awareness. I may try to get on again before the 5th, specifically I want to address the racism charges.
I uploaded the interview if anyone's interested:

Fair and balanced article. The reason that Paul is so strong is that the Republican and Democract parties are both supporting the extreme political supporters of their parties.
Paul's support comes from liberals who want the drug laws changed, independants that want an end to the Iraq war, libertarian who are want individual constitutional rights restored and so on. Those groups together form a much larger group than the Republicans could ever hope to achive! Go Ron Paul!!!

Thank you very much for allowing us to speak our minds in this manner. It's frustrating to hear/read news and have no say in what's being said. Dr. Paul is doing well because he tells the truth. He's studied Austrian economics and read what our forefathers wrote and understood what they wanted. They wanted Liberty! I do, too. Thanks for helping us get this good man in office.

An excellent and refreshingly honest article. I believe many people are bored with mainstream media, cable news, and even local news because people know when they are being snowed. I can't go anywhere without seeing Ron Paul signs posted at every home. No other candidates signs have appeared anywhere I go. The media has missed the boat on one of the stories of the century by trying to force an election outcome that only a few mega-media outlet owners want. Through the black-out of Ron Paul in mainstream media, I have become better acquainted with the internet and internet news. I don't even watch TV anymore. By ignoring Ron Paul, the grass roots candidate for American freedom, mainstream television and radio media may have killed the goose that laid the golden egg by forcing people to turn to the internet for their news. RIP Fox, CNN, ABC, et al. We won't miss you. We will be too busy enjoying American prosperity with Ron Paul as president to bother watching TV. And you can keep the flat screens too.

I am a Paul supporter. When Fox pulled their stunt I emailed every executive I could get an address for. I got one response from a VP. It was rude but at least it was a response. I also stopped watching their programing. Good job on your article.

This article is the best , and most precise article ever written regarding Ron Paul and the Republican thugs he is running against. I am glad to see that there are some media outlets that are actually telling it like it is, and no sugar coating.
