After 60 years of selling vinyl, eight-tracks, cassettes, CDs, DVDs, posters, t-shirts, toy cigarettes, little egg shakers and those trendy action figures that don't move, Cutler's is a New Haven staple. What keeps the customers coming back? "We're located on the hottest block for retail in New Haven," says owner Phil Cutler. "You can't beat Broadway. It doesn't hurt for us to have Urban Outfitters for a neighbor. It's a very hip spot. So many people come in, not necessarily to buy anything--they just want to hang out." Or maybe it's the staff. "Our employees have all worked here forever. They really love this stuff and they're super knowledgeable." Could it be the layout? "We recently reconfigured our space. And though everybody badmouths Yale, they bent over backwards to accommodate the changes we made." Perhaps it's the family history. Cutler's has been passed down through three generations. Who are we kiddin'? It's the cat. Wally is awesome.
