Phyllis Havens was not surprised that the North Haven Funeral Home rose to the top for New Haven voters. "We are the best," she says. With her husband Brian, Havens -- the home's secretary -- bought the funeral home from its previous owners more than 25 years ago. She says their excellent reputation stems from their willing and able staff members, who make the effort to accommodate any need that may arise. "We take care of social security, veteran's papers. If the family asks something, we do it," she says. "If it's something we cannot do we lead them to someone who can help them."

The funeral home's elegant facilities date to the 1800s -- the house originally belonged to a local physician -- but have been renovated recently and equipped with modern amenities such as sound and video systems. "It's important to go above and beyond," says Havens, "especially in a time of need, when you lose someone that you love."
