"I think our firm should be the beginning in the turn around of the economy," says Elaine Kaiser. "Companies can hire temporary instead of full-time people now to jump-start their companies."

Since the summer, Kaiser says, she's seen people hesitant to make new hires. "People are hesitant to see how Obama will affect local businesses. Most small companies don't know how to plan for the next year. Hiring a temporary worker is a good start."

Because there's a dearth of employers looking for new hires, Kaiser has a few tips: Since companies can be more selective now, employees should be accommodating. Great communication skills are key, as is being energetic in interviews. And, "follow up with an old handwritten letter to set yourself apart from the competition. That will keep you in employers' minds."
