The Cupcake Truck is a new addition to the mobile munchies scene in New Haven, and an anomaly in the category of food carts.
"We think we're more a bakery on wheels," explains Marsha Rowe. She and her husband Todd Rowe make up the duo that is The Cupcake Truck. The "partners in cupcake" packed up their love for baking and making people smile into a former bread truck and hit the road in July 2008, quickly becoming New Haven staples. The buzz has been big, and good for business: They've become so popular that wait time at the truck often exceeds 30 minutes.
"People just really get into it and appreciate it," says Marsha. "Cupcakes are happy food," agrees Todd. "Grab a cupcake and feel good for five minutes."
Whether you're getting an afternoon cupcake fix or treating a friend ("doing that pay it forward thing," explains Todd), you're guaranteed a delightful experience at The Cupcake Truck. Producing quality 'cakes is, Marsha explains, how she "knows how to show my love and affection."
For those who can't make it to the truck-- which frequently parks by Yale/New Haven Hospital and at the corner of Chapel and Colelge Streets-- but could still use a smile, the Rowes are getting even more creative. "You're My Cupcake," an original song for The Cupcake Truck, is now available for download on the Web site. A cupcake for the ears, the song is by Elin, a Brazilian jazz artist and friend of the Rowes. With a music video in the works, the song delivers that bit of desktop cupcake sweetness when you're stuck at work or in class, explains Todd. That is, until the truck pulls up--for exact locations check their blog fooddriven.blogspot.com-- and it's suddenly time for a cupcake break.
