What makes a good hot dog a great hot dog? Is it the bun? The way the dog is cooked? The toppings? Robbie Stone, co-owner and manager at Glenwood Drive-In, says it's partly those things. But, to put it simply, the hot dog itself has to be a great hot dog on its own, without all the accoutrements. Hummel Bros. makes a special hot dog just for the restaurant, and it's now available to the public. In business for 54 years, Glenwood is consistent and reliable.
"We try to keep everything the same so when you walk in, you know what you're getting," says Stone. Their prices are pretty close to where they've always been, but with the recent economic downturn, they did have to raise their prices "just a little bit. We were holding out for so long. Everyone's having a tough time," says Stone.
Coming soon they'll also be selling soft shell crabs, and will also feature a new item: A sea dog. It's cod, shaped like a hot dog. In the new-but-not-food department, Wednesday nights will feature car shows from 6-10 p.m., with a live DJ and raffles. And if hot dogs are totally your jam, find out for yourself why Glenwood Drive-In's dogs have been the New Haven area's best year after year after year.
