Deluxe: Greek Festival, Black Party and Ramadan Dinner PDF Print E-mail
Written by Kathleen Cei

Classic Greek eats — from meze to glyka, moussaka, gyro, spanakopita, tiropita, “flaming Greek cheese” (!) and more abound at the Saint Barbara Greek Orthodox Church 30th annual Odyssey: A Greek Festival Sept. 3-6 (rain or shine, 480 Racebrook Road, Orange; 203-795-1347, saintbarbara.org). Greek cooking demos, lectures on culture and religion, live music, dancing, a Hellenic marketplace (with books, art and a new addition this year: gourmet Greek groceries) and more round out this fun, four-day food fest, with free admission, parking and meal discounts for seniors on Friday afternoon. Kali orexi (healthy appetite)!

Make tracks to Lime Rock Park (the motorsport racing venue at 60 White Hollow Road, Lakeville; limerock.com) Sept. 4-6 for the 25th edition of A Taste of the Litchfield Hills food and wine festival (litchfieldfestivals.com). This year’s menu features “grazing-sized” portions ($4-$8) of dishes such as baby back ribs, grilled pizzas, garlic chicken-on-a-stick, Southern-style baked beans, pineapple fried rice, apple cinnamon crisp and more from eateries across the state, including New Haven’s own Indochine Pavilion and Wallingford’s Gelato Giuliana. A beverage tent will offer Connecticut wines by the glass, plus beer, lemonade, smoothies and more. You’ll also find vendors selling handcrafted chocolates and fancy picnic accessories, with live music, a vintage car show, car racing and a swap meet. For info and tickets ($15 and up; free for kids age 12 and under), call 860-435-5000 or visit limerock.com.

Deluxe: Froyo World Opens Up PDF Print E-mail
Written by Kathleen Cei
Tuesday, 24 August 2010 17:00

A sweet new shop opened up a few weeks ago downtown: Froyo World (46 High St.; 203-777-4040, froyoworld.com), a self-serve frozen yogurt lounge with a daily rotation of six flavors and up to 45 toppings to choose from. Over upbeat house music, grab a cup and fill it with your own custom blend of as many Froyo flavors as you like (from nonfat Snickerdoodle, low-fat cake batter or dairy-free kiwi-strawberry sorbet to any of the refreshing “tart” varieties), then top it with anything from fresh mangos to Fruity Pebbles, mochi (Japanese rice cakes), caramel and more — you pay by the weight (49 cents per ounce). Munch with less guilt: Since Froyo contains live, active cultures, it’s considered a “probiotic” treat, claimed to “boost the immune system and enhance the digestive tract.” Stop by for the grand opening celebration on Aug. 30 and get a free T-shirt with any purchase (while they last). Since Froyo World stays open late (until 11 p.m. Sun.-Wed. and until midnight Thu.-Sat.), it’s becoming a popular late-night spot among Crown Street club-hoppers.

StarLight Gardens (54 Fowler Ave., Durham; 860-463-0166, starlightgardensct.com), whose gorgeous organic veggies and flowers you may have seen at CitySeed’s Saturday Wooster Square Farmers’ Market (in Russo Park, at the corner of Chapel Street and DePalma Court; cityseed.org) is hosting an all-organic Chef to Farm Dinner with Chef Scott Miller from West Hartford’s Max Oyster Bar (maxrestaurantgroup.com/oyster) Aug. 29 at 6 p.m. Tickets ($95) include dinner, local wines and specialty beverages. For reservations, visit maxdiningcard.com or call 860-522-9806, ext. 15.
