Your weekly foodie fix
Who says Mother’s Day has to be confined to just one day? Moms, you deserve the night off on May 6 from 5-8 p.m., when the Chapel and Broadway Merchant Associations celebrate “Mom’s Night Out” with downtown shops offering discounts, samples, demos and more. Start out by registering for this free event at 1020 Chapel St. (above Seychelles and Raggs), where you get a T-shirt, a list of participating stores and a chance to win raffle prizes. Be treated to a stress-reducing chair massage at Claire’s Corner Copia (1000 Chapel St.; 203-562-3885, clairescornercopia.com); stop by Kerin (268 York St.; 203-772-2008) for a tasting of organic, gluten- and dairy-free artisan chocolates from Manchester-based Devine Treasures (divinetreasureschocolates.com); keep the cocoa fix flowing at Wave Gallery (1046 Chapel St.; 203-782-6212, wavegallerygifts.com), with samples of John Kelly truffle fudge (johnkellychocolates.com) and chocolates from Norwalk’s Knipschildt Chocolatier (knipschildt.com); drop in at Peter Indorf Jewelers (1022 Chapel St.; 203-776-4833, peterindorf.com) for wine and cheese (and a free ring cleaning); and be sure to make your way to Metaphore (1092 Chapel St.; 203-752-1066, metaphore-eurostyle.com), where not only will you find chef Sean Madden serving samples of imported sea salts, spices, olive oils, honeys, mustards, jams, vinegars, cookies and tea — but also a dude dressed up in a Viking costume, pouring wine. (If you can’t make it to Metaphore on May 6, don’t worry: chef Madden and the wine-pouring Viking are in the store every Thursday from 5-8 p.m.) After the shopping spree, Mom’s Night Outers can relax at Bespoke (266 College St.; 203-562-4644, bespokenewhaven.com), offering 20 percent off wines by the glass; Heirloom (1157 Chapel St.; 203-503-3919, studyhotels.com), serving a free glass of wine or beer with an appetizer or entrĂ©e purchase; Scoozzi Trattoria and Wine Bar (1104 Chapel St.; 203-776-8268, scoozzi.com) where a free glass of wine awaits with a $15 purchase; or Basta Trattoria (1006 Chapel St.; 203-772-1715, bastatrattoria.com), offering a special of two martinis and Sicilian calamari for $29. For details and a full list of participating shops, visit infonewhaven.com or elmcityparent.com. Head to Bin 100 Restaurant (100 Lansdale Ave., Milford; 203-882-1400, bin100.com) on May 6 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. for a spring wine and tapas tasting. Bin 100 — known for presenting Mediterranean flavors with creative, modern flair — is teaming up with Harry’s Wine and Liquor Market (harryswine.com) for this event, which benefits the Boys and Girls Village (bgvillage.org), a non-profit agency that serves at-risk children and families in Connecticut. For info and tickets ($30 in advance or $35 at the door), visit localwineevents.com. A taste of Philadelphia has come to Wallingford with the recent opening of M.J. Duke’s (684 N. Colony Road, Wallingford; 203-679-0022, mjdukes.com). The menu focuses on cheesesteaks, but boasts a variety of 10 Philly-style sandwiches ($4.95-$6.95), from the classic (shaved steak, topped authentically with grilled onions and Cheez Whiz or a choice of four other cheeses), to a Buffalo chicken Philly (chicken breast, hot sauce and blue cheese), a New York Philly (grilled pastrami, onions, hot mustard and Swiss) and more; hot dogs, ($1.85) with bacon and cheese ($3.60); customized 48-ounce salad bowls ($4.95) with a huge list of toppings to pick from; house-made macaroni and cheese ($2.95-$3.95); bacon cheese fries ($3.25) — plus a breakfast menu, with egg sandwiches ($3.75-$4.95), three-egg omelettes with home fries and toast ($5.50-$6.50) and more. Call ahead and have your cheesesteaks conveniently handed to you through a drive-through pick up window.
